Loopy card game6/20/2023 ![]() ![]() Not only does this game provide an opportunity to revisit curriculum content related to prefix knowledge in a way that is engaging and fun, it also provides ample exposure to the same important prefix stimuli. According to Robert Marzano, a leading and widely respected researcher in the field of vocabulary, “academic games are an extremely effective (but typically underutilized) way to help students engage with academic content and are very effective in helping students engage with and practice new vocabulary” ( I created this product to give students the opportunity to practice, retain, and carry over their prefix knowledge through a fun and cooperative learning game, which can also be played over and over again because every time the cards are dealt, the students have a different card(s) in their hand. Through games! Children learn best through engaging and interactive activities, which are fun and resemble play, while reinforcing concepts and strategies learned. Students in special education and with learning difficulties may require up to 40 exposures to the same word or word part however, it is difficult to teach students vocabulary strategies in a fun, engaging, yet repetitive way. ![]() Typically developing children need about 8-13 exposures to a new word or word part in order to learn it. Repetition of a new concept, word, or word part (in this case) is critical for retention. It also gives students the opportunity to apply this knowledge to words with prefixes to derive the meaning of these words, thus mimicking the exact same skill they need to apply when encountering unfamiliar words in text. This resource promotes retention and recall of these valuable prefixes. This makes the learning and retention of these word parts a functional and powerful tool for students. The prefixes included in this activity are those which appear in 97% of all English words containing prefixes. Teaching students prefixes and how to apply them by breaking down unfamiliar words into meaningful parts they can recognize and understand contributes significantly to their comprehension and reading success. Vocabulary development and its role in comprehension is one of the five essential components of reading as established by the National Reading Panel in 2000. ![]()
